Right to Appraisal

Rhode Island & Massachussetts

As a licensed appraiser, Prime Consulting will work hard to resolve any disputes between the repair shop and insurance company during the right to appraisal process.

But what does Right to Appraisal (RTA) mean?

In most states, if an auto repair facility and an insurance company do not agree on the scope or cost of repairs after a motor vehicle accident, the insured or claimant has the right to request an appraisal. This process is meant to help resolve the dispute in a fair and equitable way.

Not all states regulate this process; however, Rhode Island does with 27-10.4-1. Motor vehicle appraisal provision. This legislation dictates process, timeframes, and even who pays the appraisal fees.

Here is a general outline of the RTA process in Rhode Island:

The process in Massachussetts is very similar; however, timeframes are not as stringently regulated by legislature.

Once the insured/claimant decides to demand an appraisal, they must select a disinterested, licensed appraiser.
